The difference between captive and independent insurance agents

The difference between captive and independent insurance agents

What's the Difference Between Captive and Independent Insurance Agents

One Fixed Menu vs. Your Personal Chef

When it comes to insurance, not all agents work the same way. One of the biggest differences is whether you’re working with a captive agent or an independent agent — and the easiest way to understand the difference is to think about one of my favorite things-food.

The Fixed Menu Restaurant  (Captive Agents)

Imagine going to a restaurant that has a fixed menu. The staff is friendly, ordering is easy, and the food may even be excellent — but the menu doesn’t change.

If what you need is on that menu, everything works perfectly.
But if you’re looking for something a little different — a different price point, more flexibility, or something tailored to your tastes — the options are limited. And here in Florida, what we're ordering is almost always more complex.

That’s how captive agents operate. They represent one insurance company and offer that company’s coverages, pricing, and guidelines. If your situation falls outside of those parameters, there may not be much room to adjust. The restaurant isn’t doing anything wrong — they’re simply working with one menu.

In Florida, many of these Insurance Companies have stopped writing home insurance anywhere close to the coast. That makes coastal coverage a specialty that these captive agencies can't handle.

The Personal Chef Experience (Independent Agents)

Now imagine having a personal chef. Instead of choosing from one fixed menu, your chef learns your preferences, your budget, and your needs. Then they shop for ingredients, compare options, and build something specifically for you.

That’s what working with an independent agent is like.Independent agents represent multiple insurance companies, which allows them to:

  • Compare pricing across several carriers
  • Tailor coverage to your specific needs
  • Adjust options as your situation changes
  • Find solutions for unique or complex risks
  • Re-shop your coverage when rates increase

Instead of fitting you into one option, they build coverage around you.

How this Matters to You as a Customer

Insurance needs can vary widely. Your home, business, and personal situation all come with different risks — and those risks change over time.

With an independent agent:

  • If one company increases rates, you have other options
  • If your needs change, coverage can change with you
  • If your situation is unique, there are more solutions available
  • If you want to compare, you don’t have to start over somewhere else

It’s flexibility that continues long after your policy starts.

Another Benefit: Local Insight

Many independent agents are locally based and understand the risks in your area — whether that’s weather, construction trends, or business exposures. That local knowledge, combined with access to multiple companies, often leads to better coverage and more competitive pricing. Captive agents have to adhere by national guidelines that don't account for regional risks. This corporation doesn't want the risk of dealing with potential claims for Florida, so many times they won't even provide coverage to our state.

The Simple Way to Think About It

Fixed Menu Restaurant
Good service. One menu. Limited flexibility.

Personal Chef
Customized. Flexible. Built around you.

Both want to serve you well — but one is designed to adapt to your needs.

And when it comes to protecting your home, business, and future, having a personal chef makes all the difference.
